Hail Damage Claims

In July of 2013, it was reported in the news that Lovett Elementary School was scheduled to reopen for class in August after undergoing months of repairs. The Clinton Public School District’s school was closed in mid-March after a hailstorm had severely damaged the building. After windows were broken, within minutes it was raining inside the building as school faculty rushed to cover all the computers and electronic equipment. According to the school’s principle, hail the size of baseballs had perforated the school’s roof so badly that there were leaks in every classroom.

The school’s principle said that when that much water gets into a building, you have to look at the ceilings, the floor tiles and the walls, not to mention the wiring and the electrical equipment. The total cost of Lovett’s repairs exceeded $1 million.

During a hailstorm, high winds can knock down power lines, windows can be broken and roofs can be destroyed. When the hail is large enough in diameter, the shingles on the roof of a home or commercial building can be severely damaged, thereby leading to leaks and extensive structural damage inside the building. Property insurance will generally cover the cost to repair hail damage to the roof, siding and personal belongings inside a damaged building.

In recent years, the nation has experienced a series of severe storms such as in Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the 2013 Moore tornado. Such storms can involve high winds, heavy rainfall, and hail, all of which have been occurring at high intensities and affecting more parts of the country. While scientists may debate why these storms occur, no one can argue the extensive property damage they cause, or the loss of life. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), over 2 million hail damage claims were processed from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012 in the United States.
